History

Built in 1918, this 125m long cargo ship was used at the end of the First World War to transport horses and goods from New York (USA) to Brest (France). In the interwar period, she started her commercial life in North America.

Requested by the army for the second world war, the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on January 11, 1942 off Lombok island, as she was cruising from Australia to the Philippines. The water damage was tremendous, she was stranded on Tulamben beach and the cargo of rail and rubber equipment were being unloaded.

During the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963, the lava flow dragged the wreckage from the beach towards the sea. She now lies in around 6 and 30m deep sand slope and has become a treasure in aquatic life.
